Gdańsk Branch is the biggest local branch of the Institute, employing around 110 people; 95 of them have degrees, mostly in electrical and electronic engineering field.

Major customers are from Electricity Supply Industry in Poland. However our products and services have also been provided to industrial power plants (automation systems) and shipyard industry (excitation systems, shaft generator control).

At international level our products and/or services have been provided to: USA, SPAIN, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Greece, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Former Soviet Union Countries. We have been co-operating with : ABB, Alstom, Westinghouse, Siemens to provide various products and services to both polish and foreign customers.

Gdansk branch is application oriented with projects performed mainly in-house. However co-operation with industrial partners has been intensified during last years. Gdansk Division of The Institute of Power Engineering is active both in research and technical services. Technical services are performed by the same staff providing R&D. It help us important feedback. Generally we carry out the whole process from the study phase through development, design, manufacturing and installation supervision up to commissioning. This approach is applied to all our products and equipment provided.

The branch is engaged in activities connected with broadly defined electrical power engineering, internal combustion engines, systems control and hydroelectric units:

  • Power and energy digital measurement systems;
  • Precipitator diagnosis and control;
  • Power stations digital protection systems;
  • Specific communication problems in electrical power engineering;
  • Mathematical models of power system elements;
  • Excitation and voltage control systems of all types of synchronous generators;
  • Research of control systems influence on system stability;
  • New stabilizer solutions enabling increase of stable generators functioning;
  • Multi-parameter generators control algorithms, including adaptation and optimization elements;
  • Power station automatics systems basing on combustion engine;
  • Mathematical models of control systems and control algorithms;
  • Analysis of hydrosystem dynamics, including hydraulic phenomenon in pipeline;
  • Diagnosis of water and steam turbine control systems;
  • Testing new hydraulic elements for turbine control systems;
  • Designing of master control systems and water-power plant functioning control;
  • Systems of automatic voltage and reactive power control in power plants;
  • Systems of automatic transformer stations control;
  • Transformer controllers;
  • Remote control computer systems;
  • Computer system software;
  • Electric energy quality analysis:  voltage and current interference and distortion measurements;
  • Long time horizon, technical and economic analysis concerning power industry.

The Branch consists of 5 departments:

  • Department of Control, Information and Communications (OGA);
  • Department of Automation and System Analysis (OGC);
  • Department of Electrohydraulic Devices (OGH);
  • Department of Power System Automation (OGM);
  • Department of Strategy and System Development (OGS).

Gdańsk Branch cooperates with a number of institutions of the whole Polish energy sector. It also participates in works conducted by the European Energy Research Alliance.

The head of Gdańsk Branch is Dr. Michał Izdebski, PhD
